There is such a powerful tradition of trying to understand "the modern," the global, etc., that it is easy to forget how localities vary within the global contemporary. A useful reminder, thanks. As an aside, I've been to South Africa, but not there, would like to go.

This part of South Africa is great if you like wilderness, but then so are Namibia and Botswana. My spiritual home is the Karoo desert region.
