Besides the miracles attributed to St. Anthony, it seems to me that another miracle belongs to those who imagined and created that splendid stairway. It is amazing how from the meeting of two hard elements such as stone and iron, a harmonious, gentle ensemble of sober elegance can result!

What the Portuguese have done with limestone is really inspiring.

I enjoyed that -- what a civilized tram! Plus I learned two new words; 'haptic' which led to 'proprioception' -- both highly relevant to my trade.

So long as the world is an interesting place, life is worth living. Or the other way round.

Nice little piece, Wessie. I personally am very into "thought thinking," which actually makes a weird sort of sense, because I want the thought to be good, and sometimes it isn't, which is frustrating, or it is, which is pleasing. So the sight in sight seeing presupposes an idea of the sight . . . I recently saw Caspar David Friederich's Wanderer, and the actual sight was what I expected, which was a little weird, because paintings usually hit different from their reproductions . . .

Also, some cities are very cool but have relatively little, or little dramatic, to look -- they are about vibes. Atlanta and Hamburg, two cities that have been home/mean a lot to me, are hard cities to tell people how to visit. Even Berlin is cooler than it looks . . .

Anway, nice piece!

It's a good point about touch, that we have to experience it close up, in the moment, and we don't have any haptic equivalent of a camera to mediate our encounter.
